Indie Folk Singer, Dany Horovitz`s Reaches Our Hearts And Minds With His Newest Release, “Downward Into The Dark”

Friedrich Nietzsche quote about darkness from Thus Spoke Zarathustra: “But it is the same with man as with the tree. The more he seeketh to rise into the height and light, the more vigorously do his roots struggle earthward, downward, into the dark and deep—into the evil.”

For centuries, indigenous children in Canada were forcibly taken from their homes and sent to residential schools, where they were subjected to abuse and neglect. These schools operated with the explicit goal of “civilizing” indigenous children and assimilating them into Canadian society. As a result, many children never returned home, and their graves remain unmarked to this day. Though the last residential school closed in 1996, the legacies of these institutions continue to be felt by indigenous communities across Canada.

Dany Horovitz’s new indie folk track, “Downward Into the Dark,” slated for release August 19^th, is an emotional response to Canada’s dark history of residential schools. The song is both a haunting and beautiful tribute to the victims of this dark chapter in Canadian history. Horovitz’s lyrics are deeply personal and moving, and his voice is both strong and vulnerable. The result is a track that is both deeply affecting and deeply necessary. The track`s cover art was designed by Native American Lily Mason, with the muted colors and washed-out palette perfectly capturing the way we often ignore what is happening right in our own backyards. The artwork hauntingly depicts how easy it is to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others, even when it is happening right in front of us. Mason’s use of color is masterful, and her ability to evoke such strong emotions with her artwork is truly impressive. “I have no doubt that this piece will continue to haunt me for years to come.”
